Guides on this topic
- Invalid GTIN in Google Merchant Center: causes and fixesGoogle rejects a GTIN if it has the wrong length, a wrong check digit, a restricted prefix (in-store or coupon numbers) or does not belong to the product. Copy GTINs from the packaging or the manufacturer – and for products without one, leave gtin empty and submit brand + mpn or identifier_exists = no instead of inventing a number.
- Google Shopping price format: how to write price and sale_priceGoogle expects price as a number with a decimal point, a space and the ISO 4217 currency code – for example 19.99 EUR. Values like “19,99 €”, “€19.99” or a price without currency are reported as errors. The price must match your landing page and, outside the US and Canada, include VAT.
- Missing attributes in Merchant Center: what Google requiresGoogle requires 7 attributes for every product: id, title, description, link, image_link, availability, price. Others depend on the product: brand for new products, a GTIN or MPN when the manufacturer assigned one, and colour, size, gender and age group for clothing in several countries. A missing required attribute means the product is not shown.
- Turn a Shopify or WooCommerce export into a valid Google Shopping feedA shop export is not a feed: it has one row per variant, no product URL for WooCommerce or Shopify without your store address, and no currency. The Feed Validator maps the export columns to Google’s attributes and shows what is missing. In the example Shopify export, 3 products are read, 2 rows are skipped (an image row and a draft) and the product link is not in the file.
- Google Shopping product titles and descriptions: the rules that cause problemsGoogle’s product data specification limits a title to 150 characters and a description to 5,000. The Feed Validator also warns about titles in capital letters, promotional text such as “free shipping” and HTML in the description. In the example feed of 5 products, 4 have at least one such finding.
