- EU parcel duties 2026 explained: €3 duty and €2 feeParcels from outside the EU now carry a flat €3 duty per tariff position (up to €150) and since 1 November 2026 a €2 handling fee per item, plus import VAT. Three articles in two positions cost 2 × (€3 + €2) = €10.00 before VAT.
- How to calculate profit margin in e-commerceProfit margin = contribution ÷ net revenue. Take the price without VAT, subtract every variable cost of the order – product, shipping, marketplace and payment fees, advertising, returns – and divide what is left by the net price. A €19.99 phone case sold on a marketplace keeps about €6.52 per order: a 41% margin.
- Margin vs. markup: the difference and how to convertMarkup is the profit as a share of the cost, margin is the same profit as a share of the selling price (net). A 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin – the margin is always the smaller number.
- Break-even price: the lowest price that still covers your costsThe break-even price is the selling price at which one order earns exactly nothing after all its variable costs. Because marketplace and payment fees grow with the price, you cannot simply add up the costs – you have to solve for the price. For the example product it is €31.83 incl. VAT instead of the current €39.99.
- How to calculate your selling price from costs and target profitCalculate the price backwards: decide what an order should leave you – a margin or an amount – and solve for the price. Because fees grow with the price and returns and VAT change what is left, a simple “purchase price × 2” misses the target. For the example product a 25% margin needs €46.26 including VAT.
- Contribution margin per order: how to calculate it in an online shopThe contribution margin (German: Deckungsbeitrag) is what one order leaves after all costs that arise because of that order: revenue minus product, shipping, fees, advertising and returns. For the example product it is €4.95 per order. Fixed costs such as software or rent are paid from the sum of these contributions – only what is left after them is profit.
