Shopify fees explained: plans, card rates and transaction fees

Shopify costs you three things per order: the card rate of Shopify Payments (in Germany from 1.6% + €0.25 on Basic), the plan price spread over your orders, and an extra transaction fee if you use an external payment provider. For a €39.90 order on Basic that is €1.05 – and from about 1,128 orders a month the Grow plan becomes cheaper.

Choose country, plan and payment method – the Shopify calculator shows fees and profit per order and compares the plans.

The three fee types

  • Card rate (Shopify Payments): a percentage of the amount the customer pays plus a fixed amount per transaction. Cards issued abroad cost more.
  • Plan price: a fixed monthly amount – per order it shrinks the more you sell. Yearly billing is cheaper per month.
  • Transaction fee for external providers: if customers pay with a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra percentage on top of that provider's own fee.

Which plan is cheaper for you?

Higher plans cost more per month but charge lower card rates. With a €39.90 average order in Germany (yearly billing), Grow pays for itself from about 1,128 orders a month and Advanced from about 5,514 – below that, the cheaper plan wins. The calculator compares the plans for your own order value and volume.

US rates are not pre-filled in the calculator: the official US page could not be verified from our location, so you enter them from shopify.com/pricing.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Ignoring international cards

Why it matters: Cards issued abroad cost noticeably more per transaction – with many foreign customers your average fee is higher than the headline rate.

Fix: Estimate the share of international orders and calculate both cases.

Forgetting the extra fee for external providers

Why it matters: With PayPal or another gateway you pay that provider's fee plus Shopify's transaction fee for external providers.

Fix: Enter both fees, or compare the cost with Shopify Payments as the main method.

Leaving the plan price out of the order calculation

Why it matters: At low volumes the plan price per order can be larger than the card fee.

Fix: Spread the plan price over your monthly orders – the calculator does this for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify charge a fee on every sale?

With Shopify Payments you pay the card rate on each payment; there is no extra transaction fee. With an external payment provider, Shopify adds its transaction fee for external providers on top.

Are the rates the same in every country?

No – even Germany and Austria differ. Always use the pricing page of the country your store is billed in; the tables above link the official pages with the date we checked them.

Do the fees include VAT?

The calculator treats payment fees as a final cost. Whether VAT applies to your Shopify invoice depends on your registration – check your invoice.
